As Above, So Below is a meditation on faith, contradiction, and the distance between the world we have been promised and the world we have created.
The work reverses familiar visual associations of heaven and earth. The heavy black field above, often associated with darkness, absence, or evil, is instead imagined as heaven: vast, unknowable, and pure. Below, a field of metallic white evokes the earth, reflecting the language of divinity and purity back onto the human world. Between them, a narrow stroke of metallic ochre becomes a point of tension and possibility: the fragile hope of peace, restoration, and new creation.
Created in response to the artist’s struggle with faith amid the rise of Christian nationalism and the ways religious language and people can be distorted by disunity and strife, As Above, So Below asks a difficult question: What happens when the ideals of heaven and the realities of earth no longer resemble one another?
The work does not offer an easy answer. Instead, it holds the contradiction, the darkness that may contain purity, the earth that may claim divinity, and the thin, persistent line of gold that suggests that something better is still possible.
